Tyler Owens - Commanders S

Tyler Owens is rapidly becoming one of the Washington Commanders' best stories of the offseason. The athletically gifted defensive back went from a relative afterthought to almost being guaranteed a roster spot in just a few short weeks. That's an exceptional accomplishment from the undrafted free agent - especially considering the strength in depth across the safety unit.

Owens further cemented his claims in Preseason Week 1 at MetLife Stadium. He forced a fumble and stood out considerably on special teams for good measure. Dan Quinn signaled him out for special praise after a closer examination of the preseason game-day film. In a summer full of positives for the Texas Tech product, this one is right up there.

The Commanders quickly identified Owens as a high-priority target once the draft concluded. He's got every physical intangible Quinn and Joe Whitt Jr. seek in their defensive backs. He's a big hitter with outstanding instincts. It's been beyond encouraging up to now. Perhaps even brighter than even the most positive optimist envisaged.

All signs are pointing up for Owens. He won't be taking anything for granted, so keeping the same mindset that got him this far will leave those in power with no option other than to make room on their 53-man roster.

Alex Taylor - Commanders OT

Alex Taylor was a relatively late arrival to the Commanders this offseason. General manager Adam Peters brought him into the fold after a couple of injuries to the team's offensive tackle options. Making the roster will be a difficult challenge, but it's one the formidable edge protector is embracing.

Taylor maximized almost every rep he was given in Preseason Week 1 at the New York Jets. His 6-foot-8 size and length proved to be a real asset in pass protection. There was also a lot to like on film about the way he plowed the road on running plays when the opportunity arose.

This was a strong early impression from Taylor. Keeping this up and perhaps even building on it further is the next test. The former South Carolina State standout has the physical tools needed to be an asset. It's not come together fully as yet, but the lineman is displaying the correct mentality and producing when called upon.

That's all the Commanders can ask of someone who's been around the football operation for just over a week. Taylor's adapted well in testing circumstances - something that's no doubt made the coaching staff sit up and take notice along the way.
