7 Commanders players on the hot seat entering Preseason Week 2 at Dolphins
By Dean Jones
Cole Turner - Commanders TE
The Washington Commanders arguably have their top three tight ends sewn up already. Veteran free-agent signing Zach Ertz, rookie second-round pick Ben Sinnott, and blocking specialist John Bates have all come in for praise from the coaching staff over the team's training camp. That leaves Coole Turner with no margin for error in pursuit of making this squad under the new regime.
Turner brought in his only target for four receiving yards at the New England Patriots. His costly mistake during a joint practice with the Miami Dolphins led to an interception off Jayden Daniels. That's not the best way to inspire belief in his potential to thrive when the spotlight shines brighter.
This is a make-or-break game for Turner in many respects. Having obvious physical gifts is not enough anymore. The former fifth-round selection out of Nevada must raise confidence by being an assured asset in the passing game and a dependable blocker on the edge when the situation dictates. Nothing else will do.
The player's fate depends on how many tight ends Washington takes onto their 53. Turner is in a good spot if the choice is four. At the same time, any complacency that creeps into his game will come with grave consequences attached.
Keandre Jones - Commanders LB
Keandre Jones is in danger of getting left behind in the Commanders' linebacking room. He made a decent enough impression in their preseason opener at the New York Jets, gaining four tackles and showing no signs of rust. This was the most important thing above all else on his long road into consideration.
That's just the start for Jones if he wants to book his place on the 53-man roster. It still looks like a long shot considering the options at Washington's defensive second level currently. However, rookie linebacker Jordan Magee's absence through injury should provide the former Maryland star with some additional opportunities to prove his worth during the Commanders' second warmup contest.
Jones hasn't suited up for a competitive NFL game since 2022 with the Cleveland Browns. Changing the narrative of being just a camp body is his primary objective. He'll know what comes next if objectives aren't met or performances aren't up to scratch.
Whether he's done enough up to this point is debatable. A strong performance at the Miami Dolphins could be enough to build the momentum needed to enhance his credentials somewhat.
