Jonathan Allen - Commanders DT

Jonathan Allen cut a forlorn figure for most of the 2023 season. The veteran defensive tackle grew increasingly frustrated as another campaign in his prime was wasted by previous head coach Ron Rivera. He lacked the motivation needed and made no secret that his long-term future with the franchise would be considered earlier this year.

Allen was enthused enough by the widespread changes to stick around. The Washington Commanders never entertained the thought of trading the Pro Bowler. Looking at the way he's performed over the team's training camp so far, it's not hard to see why.

The former Alabama star has returned to his motivational ways. Allen's energy is night and day from last season. Dan Quinn also lauded the player for setting the right tone during their first padded practice. He came alive during the session to raise confidence about his chances of returning to his old form in 2024.

Allen is held to a higher standard given his locker room status and previous performance levels. The lineman fell way short of these expectations last time around, but he looks like a man capable of silencing some lingering doubters when competitive action begins once again.

Frankie Luvu - Commanders LB

There aren't many new arrivals that look potentially more impactful than Frankie Luvu. The Commanders made the linebacker a high-priority target in free agency and he turned down an extension with the Carolina Panthers to join forces with Dan Quinn. This already looks to be a match made in heaven based on early impressions.

Luvu's been one of the stars over training camp so far. His energy, explosiveness, and ability to make plays have come across consistently. The former undrafted free agent has an aura that people naturally gravitate toward. His ruthless aggression and unrivaled enthusiasm are examples for others to follow. His presence is nothing short of a whirlwind on and off the field.

The Commanders might have something special on their hands with Luvu. He's a constant source of inspiration and the beating heart of Washington's defense. If his partnership at the second level alongside perennial All-Pro linebacker Bobby Wagner reaches the level anticipated, it won't be much longer before significant improvements arrive with defensive coordinator Joe Whitt Jr. leading the charge.

Luvu is a breath of fresh air. He's the spark that can ignite Washington's defense to great things if things continue similarly before Week 1 at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
