Commanders could sign Mike Caliendo (OL)

The Washington Commanders currently have the oft-injured Sam Cosmi slated for one guard spot, and – well, nobody – slated for the other. Maybe it will be Saahdiq Charles or Chis Paul. Maybe it will be Nick Gates if rookie Ricky Stromberg can assume the center spot. Maybe it will be Braeden Daniels, seeing as the franchise seems to love shifting college tackles inside.

Here’s a thought, though. Maybe it would be a good idea to just get a reliable, experienced young interior lineman.

Mike Caliendo was on the Kansas City Chiefs practice squad for most of last season. But he started about a thousand games at Western Michigan and seemed equally adept at playing all three interior positions.

He does not have elite athleticism and is probably destined to be a career depth piece. But as we have seen, those types of players, especially the ones who can stay healthy, are essential in today’s NFL. Washington had this type of player in Wes Schweitzer for the last several seasons.

Schweitzer is now gone, and even though Caliendo isn’t nearly as physically powerful, he is still young. Get him in the weight room and see what happens. He is a long shot to make the Chiefs final roster so he will most likely be available.
