7 bold predictions for Washington Commanders 2024 training camp
By Dean Jones
Commanders sign Stephon Gilmore
Adam Peters was aggressive in pursuit of improving the Washington Commanders' roster over his first offseason at the helm. This trend should continue if the new general manager decides more is needed.
The Commanders have better options at their disposal. However, some glaring holes could hold them back based on how things look currently. One potential complication centers on the team's outside cornerback options unless Benjamin St-Juste and Emmanuel Forbes Jr. respond positively to improved coaching.
Dan Quinn and Joe Whitt Jr. know how to get the best out of their defensive backs. That raises hope Forbes and St-Juste can develop. If things don't go well over the early stages of camp, that might be enough for Peters to seek alternatives.
Finding someone who could slot in quickly would be key in this scenario. Stephon Gilmore worked closely with Quinn last season during their time together with the Dallas Cowboys. He's not the force of old, but his production last time around suggests there is plenty more good football left before the potential Pro Football Hall of Famer walks away.
Gilmore remains unsigned. He knows his worth and is unwilling to take a discount. Fortunately for the Commanders, they have more than enough financial resources to make him an enticing offer if they feel it could benefit their defense in 2024.
Brian Robinson Jr. earns camp MVP status
Brian Robinson Jr. has gone relatively under the radar this offseason amid such wholesale changes across the board. However, his importance to the Commanders' chances of becoming a complete offensive unit next season cannot be overstated.
Robinson took a notable surge forward in 2023. Things weren't easy within Eric Bienimy's pass-happy scheme, but there was a lot to like about the way he applied himself in difficult circumstances. The best is yet to come entering Year 3 of his professional career - something offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury will look to unlock next time around.
Washington signed Austin Ekeler in free agency and expects Chris Rodriguez Jr. to develop after his rookie flashes. This won't impact Robinson's influence. He'll be the bell-cow and based on his production during the previous campaign, the former third-round pick out of Alabama is more than capable of shouldering the load.
Expect Robinson to cement his status as an integral piece of the puzzle over camp. It wouldn't be a surprise to see him emerge as the standout performer above everyone else when it's all said and done.
