Which free-agent quarterbacks could the Washington Commanders target during their first offseason under general manager Adam Peters in 2024?
After Sam Howell's rollercoaster first season as Washington Commanders starting quarterback, the new regime must make solving their complications at football's most important position their top priority. This is the one glaring failure above all else that sealed Ron Rivera's fate. The sooner it gets resolved, the sooner this once-proud franchise can start looking forward to a brighter future.
The Commanders have the No. 2 overall selection in the 2024 NFL Draft. Most analysts project them to take a quarterback - either Jayden Daniels or Drake Maye - with the pick. Some are even speculating whether something bolder might be in the works that would enable Caleb Williams to spearhead his hometown team's renaissance.
If general manager Adam Peters does go down the rookie route, the Commanders could be in the market for a veteran to help them with their transition. What this means for Howell's future is unclear, but there will be no sentiment attached to the decision-making process whatsoever in pursuit of better fortunes.
With this in mind, here are six free-agent quarterbacks the Commanders could sign in 2024.
Commanders could sign Gardner Minshew
Gardner Minshew got more action than he probably anticipated last season. Rookie phenom Anthony Richardson went down with a season-ending shoulder complication after just four games. This enabled the experienced signal-caller to slot in and fill the void.
Minshew performed well in difficult circumstances. He completed 62.2 percent of his passes for 3,305 yards through the air, 15 touchdowns, and nine interceptions. He achieved a 7-6 record, which wasn't quite enough for the Indianapolis Colts to make the postseason. But it did earn the former sixth-round pick his first Pro Bowl appearance.
Still, Minshew should generate interest in free agency from teams looking to solidify depth and secure a dependable backup. If this is a route the Washington Commanders are also planning to take, they could do far worse than look in his direction.
