Commanders could sign Mike Onwenu

Mike Onwenu is a huge man, carrying 350 pounds on his 6-foot-3 frame. He has been one of the few bright spots on a beleaguered New England Patriots offense over the past couple of seasons, and they would like to re-sign him.

With so many holes on the roster, they may not be able to afford a price tag that should be comparable to that of Ezra Cleveland’s. This is expected to be somewhere in the $13 million per season range.

Though his frame seems ideal for a guard, Onwenu also had success sliding out to right tackle for the Patriots last season. His positional flexibility will make him very attractive to teams looking to upgrade across the board.

He is probably best suited to play right guard. That is where Onwenu played in college at Michigan. That is where he has been at his best for New England. As such, his signing would raise the same issues about Sam Cosmi that acquiring Kevin Dotson would.

Onwenu would instantly improve the Washington Commanders' underpowered run game. And he is a very respectable pass-blocker as well. He is 26 years old and already has 56 NFL starts on his resume. He is just entering his prime.

Along with Dotson and Cleveland, Onwenu would enter as a Day 1 starter on an improved Commanders' offensive line.
