Kliff Kingsbury - Commanders OC

Like Anthony Lynn, Kliff Kingsbury is a former NFL head coach. That's where the similarities seemingly end.

It is worth noting that whereas Lynn’s four yearsa with the Los Angeles Chargers saw one playoff appearance and an overall winning record, Kingsbury’s four seasons as Arizona Cardinals head coach witnessed one trip to the postseason and an overall losing record.

Kingsbury is the Washington Commanders offensive coordinator in 2024, with Lynn serving under him as run game coordinator. Some attribute that to the NFL's questionable hiring practices. Others to the play-caller's reputation as a quarterback guru who excels in devising creative passing attacks.

Regardless of where the truth may lie, Kingsbury has a lot riding on the 2024 season. The Commanders are giving him a route back. He must take full advantage.

He has a dynamic rookie quarterback to develop and a lot of new parts to mesh into a productive offense. In addition to the man under center, Kingsbury has a rebuilt offensive line and new tight ends. He has key new pieces at both wide receiver and running back. With a defensive-minded head coach, the coordinator will get to put his mark on a brand-new offense.

If that offense succeeds, Kingsbury immediately shoots to the top of many teams’ wish lists for a new head coach. He is still young but has a wealth of experience. He is viewed as someone who can develop young quarterbacks. He is exactly what most teams think they want. He just has to prove it on the field in 2024.

There are some in the league who consider Kingsbury’s failure to take Kyler Murray and the Cardinals into the upper echelon of the league a sign that his reputation is built more on image than on substance. He has a golden opportunity in 2024 to prove those doubters wrong.

If he does, the payoff could be enormous.
