Despite their atrocious performance in 2023, the Washington Commanders had some good players. On offense, Terry McLaurin and Sam Cosmi were very good, perhaps even elite. The juniors - Brian Robinson and Charles Leno - both turned in solid professional campaigns.

Even on the much-maligned defense, Kendal Fuller and Kamren Curl were good players. Defensive tackles Jonathan Allen and Daron Payne may not have been at their best, but they were still above-average performers.

The Commanders had some good players. They just didn’t have enough of them.

Football teams may need star quarterbacks to succeed, but they also require complete rosters. Rosters with depth. Without major holes. The Commanders have not had that in many years.

Several players need to take major steps forward to achieve this objective in 2024. A lot is riding on rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels and other prized rookies like Mike Sainristil and Ben Sinnott. But the Commanders desperately need some veterans to also take major strides next season.

Some of these players are older. Some are younger. They all have one thing in common. They all failed to live up to expectations in 2023.

The Commanders addressed needs on the offensive and defensive lines and at linebacker with free agents. Of these players, only Frankie Luvu profiles to be a potential standout. The others - players like Tyler Biadasz, Dorance Armstrong Jr., and Nick Allegretti - are solid young veterans who should be quality contributors for at least the next several years.

The Commanders don’t need bounce-back seasons from these players. They just need them to continue their steady development.

If that happens and most of the rookies play up to their potential, Washington will have a better team in 2024. If they are to have a significantly better season - one in which they challenge for the NFC East title and a playoff berth - they need something extra. They need another group of players to perform well above their 2023 standards.

Here are five Commanders players who need redemption in 2024. If they succeed, fans could witness a much-desired return to respectability this year.
