5 trades the Commanders could make to bolster playoff hopes in 2024

Commanders could trade for Jonathan Jones
The Washington Commanders' defense made some encouraging strides in Week 4. It looked as if more of the same poor production was on the way after a subpar showing in the first quarter. However, defensive coordinator Joe Whitt Jr. made the adjustments needed to spearhead a mini-renaissance from his talented yet underperforming unit.
This is the standard Washington's defense must live up to moving forward. There are still concerns that could hold them back. We've already spoken about the pass rush, but the cornerback unit could also use an added injection of quality if the Commanders want to make the surprising playoff dreams a reality.
Jonathan Jones is a name to consider. The talented defensive back could be deemed surplus to requirements by the New England Patriots despite an outstanding start to the season. This is a rebuilding team looking to navigate the post-Bill Belichick era successfully. Parting ways with the former undrafted free agent out of Auburn is something they'd likely consider if the right opportunity comes along.
Jones is out of contract next spring, so the Commanders must decide if this is someone worthy of a contract extension at 31 years old. Having some added incentive over the second half of 2024 only sweetens the pot.
Commanders could trade for Davante Adams
As previously mentioned, the Commanders are reportedly looking to add another wide receiver before the 2024 trade deadline. This needs to be the right package that works for the team as part of Adam Peters' long-term vision for the future, but their incredible start to the campaign means striking while the iron is hot could be something to consider.
There appears to be a situation brewing between the Las Vegas Raiders and Davante Adams. Head coach Antonio Pierce said certain players made business decisions after they were beaten by the Carolina Panthers in Week 4. The All-Pro pass-catcher was missing from the lineup last weekend, with some speculating that this relationship between the player and the franchise has gone past the point of no return.
The Raiders won't be giving Adams away. He's still one of the league's best wideouts and can route up even the most elite cornerbacks at will when in the mood. Perhaps a fresh start is the best possible solution for all parties, which is exactly what the Commanders would provide.
Adams wasn't complimentary about Northwest Stadium or Washington's fanbase during a recent interview. However, the prospect of playing with Jayden Daniels and opposite Terry McLaurin could change his mind quickly.
