Commanders preach patience

Even if the Washington Commanders were to make all of these moves. Even if they had Drake Maye to learn under Kirk Cousins for a year or two. Even if they drafted a few stellar offensive linemen to add to Sam Cosmi and build the protection of the future. Even if they did sign Patrick Queen and Jamin Davis were to improve under the new regime…

The Commanders would still be many players away.

Losing cornerback Kendall Fuller will hurt more than most realize. He is a super player who sometimes makes plays like getting around blocks on screens to stop good wide receivers for losses. His departure will be felt as soon as the first game.

The Commanders need more offensive firepower. They need to fill the void left by Montez Sweat - not so much by Chase Young - and they need to improve at safety.

There is a lot to do. But signing Cousins and drafting Brock Bowers and another top-tier offensive tackle from the draft would improve the run game extensively, allowing Brian Robinson Jr. and Chris Rodriguez Jr. to show that they could be a really good running back duo.

With this plan, the Commanders would give themselves a shot at winning the NFC East title next season. But make no mistake, they are a long way from being Super Bowl contenders and must exercise patience.

Just don't tell that to Jonathan Allen.
