Pro No. 2

Inner confidence in Commanders' chances

Nobody makes a move for someone like Davante Adams unless they are confident of making some noise in the postseason. He's still performing incredibly well, but it's a short-term arrangement given his age. Expectations would surge immediately for whichever team acquires him - likely in the not-too-distant future - that need to be matched by a deep playoff push.

If the Washington Commanders pulled the trigger on this trade, which still seems far-fetched all things considered, it's a telling sign of the inner confidence within the building that this storied franchise is ready to win now. That should inspire the fanbase and send excitement through the roof. It will also pile additional and perhaps unnecessary early pressure on this project to bear fruit in Year 1 under the new regime.

Anyone saying Adams wouldn't make this team better is kidding themselves. There are still plenty of holes to fill - most notably on the pass rush and at the cornerback position. But if those in power have 100 percent conviction that they can challenge for the NFC East much sooner than anticipated, trading for the prolific wideout legitimizes this notion.

It would also be another step in making the NFL sit up and take notice. The Commanders are on their way back. How quickly Adam Peters thinks this can be accomplished will be the determining factor.

Con No. 3

Davante Adams is a luxury, not a necessity

Trading for Davante Adams is a luxury largely saved for teams that think they are one prominent piece away from entering the Super Bowl picture. Even the Las Vegas Raiders believed that when they reunited the wide receiver with his former college quarterback Derek Carr. It quickly became an ill-advised judgment, but they were well within their right to go for broke.

The Commanders are in a tricky spot. They've got a long-term strategy to take this struggling organization from the proverbial wilderness and back into contention. However, their sensational opening to the campaign coupled with some winnable games upcoming over the next five weeks could see their outlook change rapidly.

Looking at the roster's current state, Adams seems like a luxury rather than a necessity. There are other holes to fill. And besides, the Commanders could arguably get a productive wideout before the trade deadline at a fraction of the cost based on recent history around the league.

Adams and Terry McLaurin with Jayden Daniels under center is a mouth-watering proposition. Adam Peters wouldn't be doing his job if he didn't speak to the Las Vegas Raiders. Just don't expect it to be anything more than that just yet.
