5 potential Commanders candidates to replace Charles Leno Jr.

Commanders could sign Tyron Smith
If the Washington Commanders decide on a short-term solution before drafting a longer-term left tackle in the 2025 NFL Draft, someone like Tyron Smith might be a gamble worth making. The future Pro Football Hall of Famer is firmly at the tail-end of his glittering career. That said, his production last season indicates there could be one or two good years left in the tank.
Smith is no stranger to the Commanders having spent his entire playing career with the NFC East rival Dallas Cowboys. He was nothing short of exceptional in 2023, giving up just one sack and conceding three penalties from 847 snaps. Couple this with his outstanding influence on running downs, and it's not hard to see why he gained a fantastic 83.8 grade from Pro Football Focus as a result of his efforts.
This would be a controversial switch for Smith. One that wouldn't go down well with Cowboys fans. However, the presence of Dan Quinn as Commanders' head coach means the move cannot be completely dismissed.
Despite his eight Pro Bowl selections and two All-Pro distinctions, there are some concerns. Smth's dealt with his fair share of injury problems in recent years. One couldn't say for sure when the veteran is going to fall off the proverbial cliff in terms of performance levels. That's why having Quinn around - someone who watched the lineman closely last season - is going to be invaluable.
Smith would be an instant upgrade on Charles Leno Jr. Whether the Commanders are looking for something other than a band-aid fix is another matter.
