Commanders could sign Marcua Mariota

All signs point to the Washington Commanders taking a quarterback at No. 2 overall in the 2024 NFL Draft. Speculation continues around a potential trade-up to get Caleb Williams. However, there is growing belief around the league that he's heading for the Chicago Bears at No. 1.

Even so, the Commanders need someone capable of becoming a franchise-altering presence under center. Sam Howell just didn't do enough. Some fresh blood is needed to provide hope for the future under Dan Quinn's new regime.

A scenario could emerge where Howell is moved on if there is sufficient interest. Regardless if he stays or not, the Commanders could target a veteran quarterback in free agency to provide a level of experience to the room. Especially if Jacoby Brissett takes his chances elsewhere as expected.

Brian Johnson worked alongside Marcus Mariota last season. The former No. 2 overall selection won't ever meet those lofty expectations. But he's a dependable backup and has been around long enough to help Washington's rookie quarterback make a smooth transition.

Taking three quarterbacks onto NFL rosters is a rare sight these days - especially with the new rule that allows for an emergency third option to be activated on game days. But if Howell leaves - which does appear unlikely - Johnson's influence could see the Commanders turn to someone like Mariota.
