Dyami Brown seals Commanders roster spot

Dyami Brown came into the offseason with his roster hopes hanging by a thread. The wide receiver was an afterthought throughout his first three seasons with the Washington Commanders. Many wondered if he'd get another shot, but the new regime wanted to see if the player's career could be salvaged by improved schematics and coaching throughout the preparation period.

It's been refreshing to see Brown come to life. He's made several outstanding plays at training camp. The former third-round selection out of North Carolina took this momentum into Washington's preseason opener, emerging from his clash against the New York Jets with a tremendous amount of credit.

Brown caught a deep ball from Jayden Daniels for the game's best highlight. He got downfield quickly on a vertical route and tracked the football superbly before making the catch. The wideout was targeted three times, bringing in two receptions for 55 receiving yards.

This all but confirms Brown's status on the 53-man roster. His blend of speed and athleticism offers something different to the Commanders. If the same trend continues in the weeks ahead, he could be in line for extended involvement in a contract year.

Tyler Owens stakes his claim

Tyler Owens quickly became one of the team's unheralded stars at training camp. The physically gifted defensive back looked explosive and capable of forcing his way into Washington's plans. Doing it in practice is one thing. Producing in a typical game-day setting is completely different.

This was always going to be the biggest challenge for Owens. He's passed every test so far, which left hopes high he could do the same again during his NFL debut at the New York Jets.

Owens displayed his speed with several impressive plays. He blew up a punt return on special teams, which is an essential skill to have for anyone further down the depth chart. The former Texas Tech star didn't look out of place when given reps on the defensive rotation.

Nobody could have asked any more from Owens. This enhanced his chances of making the roster, but finishing the preparation period off strongly is key. After that, those in power will have no option other than to make room for the undrafted free agent. Who will be sacrificed in this scenario is up for debate.
