5 grave concerns from Washington Commanders 2024 training camp
By Dean Jones
The Washington Commanders had newfound optimism in abundance heading into training camp. It was hard to put into words the level of changes across the franchise this offseason and what they could mean for the future. Even so, the most important thing from a fan perspective is improving the football product in 2024.
Nobody is expecting the Commanders to be playing for the Super Bowl. They might not even achieve a winning record or make the postseason. That doesn't mean head coach Dan Quinn cannot oversee an encouraging campaign looking at the increased standards and enhanced professionalism around the organization.
This positivity increased exponentially throughout the summer. However, some potential complications could hold them back when it's all said and done. Adam Peters is a smart guy, so this won't be overlooked as he looks to get the Commanders trending up after decades of wallowing among the league's bottom-feeders.
With this in mind, here are five grave concerns that emerged from Washington's 2024 training camp in Ashburn.

Commanders kick/punt return options
The Washington Commanders and others around the league have an opportunity to maximize the NFL's new kickoff rules. This can benefit the return team if they can find explosive difference-makers in this critical discipline.
Washington tried out several kick and point returners over the summer. None have particularly stood out. Perhaps Jamison Crowder is in the driver's seat thanks to his previous performance levels and overall experience. That's not a guarantee by any stretch.
Kazmeir Allen, Jahan Dotson, and Noah Igbinoghene seem like the most likely others unless the Commanders acquire someone else off the waiver wire. The Commanders even tried cornerback Emmanuel Forbes Jr. in the return game, which does seem a little desperate despite his explosive traits.
It'll be interesting to see how this dynamic shakes out. Watching who takes the reins in Washington's preseason finale at the New England Patriots will be a telling clue. At the same time, Peters could easily pick someone up who doesn't quite make the grade elsewhere.
