Commanders should consider Jamir Jones

In two years, Jamir Jones has already played in games for three different NFL franchises. It seemed as if he had a big supporter in Mike Tomlin of the Pittsburgh Steelers, who signed him twice during this spell.

Last year, Jones appeared as a backup and on special teams in all 17 Steelers games. I tend to trust Tomlin when it comes to evaluating linebackers.

This is why I remain a little concerned that the Steelers recently cut Jones loose. There was no need to do it, so it raises questions.

True, Pittsburgh signed Tanner Muse, Elandon Roberts, and Cole Holcomb this off-season, and then drafted Nick Herbig a few weeks ago. They are clearly remaking their linebacker/edge position, but they didn’t necessarily have to release Jones.

Jones is primarily a special teamer, and in very limited action has shown ability as a pass rusher. He is a bigger linebacker, and with the departure of Holcomb, the Washington Commanders don’t really have anyone built like that.

If that is an organizational preference, so be it. I just don’t see the problem with giving an audition to a big, aggressive hitter who had some experience at the linebacker spot. It is something the Commanders do not currently have on the roster.
