Commanders' safety dynamic

The Washington Commanders opted not to offer Kamren Curl a new deal despite his rise from a seventh-round selection into a productive starter. Adam Peters felt like he could get more bang for his buck elsewhere, which altered the safety dynamic dramatically throughout an offseason of significant change.

Jeremy Chinn joined from the Carolina Panthers in free agency. He's not hit the heights anticipated following a sensational rookie year in 2020, but the former second-round selection has the physical profile needed to thrive within Dan Quinn's defensive system.

Darrick Forrest should also feature prominently after a frustrating injury ended his 2023 campaign well ahead of time. It'll also be interesting to see what the Commanders' new regime has planned for Quan Martin following some encouraging progress in Year 1 of his career.

Percy Butler, Jeremy Reaves, and sixth-round pick Dominique Hampton are also pushing for playing time. The options available to Quinn and Joe Whitt Jr. are plentiful. Getting the dynamic right over camp is critical.

Does Jayden Daniels have the right support?

Jayden Daniels comes into the Commanders with lofty expectations on his young shoulders. Those in power were highly impressed with the quarterback en route to taking him No. 2 overall in the 2024 NFL Draft. They believe his skill set can become the perfect springboard behind better fortunes. It's a lot of pressure, but nothing the Heisman Trophy winner isn't capable of handling effectively.

Daniels set the right tone over early offseason workouts. His high-quality distribution under center caught the eye. However, the signal-caller's exceptional work ethic and willingness to commit fully instantly won over established teammates.

This trend should continue when camp commences. Daniels has the tools to take the league by storm. What the Commanders must figure out is whether the Heisman Trophy winner has enough support around him to hit the ground running.

Washington's rushing attack looks stable. Every wide receiver aside from Terry McLaurin comes with questions to answer. The tight-end additions should help, but there's just no telling for sure. There's also the small matter of the Commanders' offensive line to factor into the equation.

Daniels is gifted with the modern-day traits of a productive quarterback. However, one doesn't have to look far around the league for examples of rookie signal-callers floundering in woeful environments. The Commanders cannot afford that, so expect reinforcements to arrive if they're not 100 percent convinced.
