Jayden Daniels to play Commanders' preseason opener

It's hard to ignore the supreme momentum building around Jayden Daniels. His flawless start to life with the Washington Commanders thanks to sterling on-field production and tireless work ethic has been a breath of fresh air. Something that only raises expectations about what the No. 2 overall selection in the 2024 NFL Draft can accomplish long term.

Although team legend Joe Theismann made his thoughts about playing Daniels in the preseason known, Dan Quinn had other ideas. The head coach confirmed that the former LSU star will be on the field for Washington's first warmup game at the New York Jets. Whether that's as the starter or not wasn't determined.

Quinn thought this was the next logical step in Daniels' ongoing assessment based on comments via the team's website. It's also a good chance for the quarterback to get some live fire in a typical NFL game-day setting, which will be invaluable before things matter much more in Week 1.

"I think we've probably said it all along there's been a whole process. It's not been a secret at all but a process of how we're going to go get guys ready. So, the games are important, to go and play and get ready -- not just with Jayden, but with everybody."

Daniels caught the eye once again on Day 9 of training camp. This was also the best showcase yet of the signal-caller's mobility and how it can help this offense thrive moving forward.

The Heisman Trophy winner demonstrated his explosiveness running the football on the long ground gain that found the end zone. While the dual-threat force isn't in danger of getting hit in this type of setting, it's not a bad thing for Daniels to have in his arsenal when things aren't developing downfield as expected.

All signs are pointing up for Daniels. If he comes through Washington's preseason slate with even more positivity, the better his chances will be.
