Commanders WR stepping up

There is a lot of pressure on rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels heading into the campaign, but he cannot do it alone. If the No. 2 overall selection in the 2024 NFL Draft wants to take the league by storm immediately, he needs his supporting cast to reach their targets. The wide receiver production will be a significant piece of the puzzle.

The Washington Commanders seem confident that they've got the weapons needed to ensure Daniels hits the ground running. Terry McLaurin is the undisputed alpha, with Jahan Dotson and Luke McCaffrey also set to play important roles. Fringe players like Mitchell Tinsley and Brycen Tremayne are providing those in power with plenty to think about thanks to outstanding showings over the first nine days of training camp.

Olamide Zacchaeus is another pass-catcher staking a strong claim for extended involvement in 2024. The veteran free-agent signing knows Dan Quinn well from their time with the Atlanta Falcons. It took him a while to get going this offseason, but the light's come on in no uncertain terms over Week 2 of camp based on the musings of those in attendance.

Zaccheaus has come to life as intensity increases. He's flourished during 1-on-1 battles with the pads on. There's also a lot to like about his developing chemistry with Washington's quarterbacks to further raise enthusiasm.

Although Zaccheaus is known more for his special teams prowess than production on offense, that could change in Washington. The Commanders weren't blessed with much consistency in the wideout room aside from McLaurin last time around. Opportunity knocks for the wideout, who boasts a career catch success rate of 60.8 percent.

Watching how the Commanders utilize Zaccheaus during the preseason will provide a broader insight into his potential usage. But his elusiveness and reliability could be an asset to offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury if the same trend continues before Week 1 at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
