5 critical observations from Commanders 2024 training camp Day 8

Undrafted rookie makes another splash
Undrafted free agents face a harder job than almost everyone else in pursuit of making an NFL roster. It's challenging to start from the bottom and work your way up. However, it's not impossible by any stretch of the imagination.
The Washington Commanders took an undrafted prospect through onto their 53-man squad in 2023 when wide receiver Mitchell Tinsley surged from nowhere to secure his deserved place. A similar situation is emerging this summer - albeit on the other side of the football.
Tyler Owens is seizing his opportunity with both hands. The physically imposing safety seems to be catching the eye in almost every practice. This was the case once again on Day 8 when he snagged an interception from a pass intended for fellow rookie Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint according to those in attendance.
The former Texas Tech star is staking a strong claim to make the roster. Competition is fierce at the safety position and nothing is guaranteed. At the same time, Owens got his foot in the door quickly to build some positive initial momentum.
This is making coaches and fans take notice, which is always half the battle for unheralded prospects from the college ranks. Owens has some interesting views on the world, but his performance levels have been nothing short of exceptional to this point.
Owens will get opportunities to fortify his roster hopes in the coming weeks. Washington's coaching staff would be wise to get him plenty of reps in the preseason. This will be a tremendous measuring stick for the first-year pro regarding what he can potentially bring to the defensive rotation and special teams.
Watching how Owens copes with the Commanders' joint practices is something else that will form an important part of his ongoing assessment. The defensive back isn't lacking in confidence. Whether this whirlwind start to life in Washington continues could be the difference between making the team or an uncertain future.
