Emmanuel Forbes Jr. embracing the challenge

Emmanuel Forbes Jr. is under intense scrutiny this offseason. The cornerback didn't enjoy the best fortunes in Year 1 of his professional career, but there are more promising signs under the accomplished coaches at the Washington Commanders' disposal.

Forbes heard all the criticism and is looking to put things right. He gained 17 pounds this offseason to cope more effectively with the NFL's physicality. He's also been battling throughout Washington's training camp with Pro Bowl wide receiver Terry McLaurin, which will only help heading into his potential bounce-back campaign.

The former Mississippi State star embraces the challenge and looks like a more accomplished performer. Getting it done in a competitive setting is the biggest challenge, but Forbes is aiming to prove himself with a clean slate and seems encouraged by the defense's overall progress based on comments via the team's website.

"I have to prove that I'm worthy to play for these coaches, they didn't draft me. Like you said, everybody in the locker room feels like they have something to prove and feel like we have a lot of talent, so we just got to put it to use. We're getting a lot of pressure on our quarterbacks. So, offensive, [defensive] line, they go at it every day, and that helps out the secondary a lot. And we're playing fast in the secondary and just looking to make plays on the ball."

The No. 16 overall selection in the 2023 NFL Draft has talent. McLaurin is making some big plays against him during drills, but Forbes is also having some encouraging moments. There aren't many better than the former Ohio State star, so this crash course throughout the summer is going to serve him well when the real action arrives.

Fans are approaching Forbes' encouraging progress with cautious optimism. Seeing is believing. Producing the goods in Week 1 at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and beyond is the only thing that matters when push comes to shove.
