5 critical observations from Commanders 2024 training camp Day 8

Brandon Coleman continues to shine
Brandon Coleman is emerging as one of the stars of training camp. The rookie offensive tackle transitioned seamlessly to the Washington Commanders, proving his worth on the edge and raising confidence in his chances of potentially becoming the Week 1 starter on quarterback Jayden Daniels' blindside.
There were concerns about whether Coleman could handle responsibilities at left tackle given his perceived lack of legitimate length. He's alleviating these in the best possible way so far.
It's still early and Coleman needs to prove himself in a more typical game-day setting, but there is a lot to like about the way he's applied himself. The former TCU star also seems to be pulling clear of veteran Cornelius Lucas for the No. 1 job.
Coleman got the bulk of first-team reps once again on Day 8 of training camp and shone according to those in attendance. There are times when he gives up pressure - especially on inside moves - but these are becoming less frequent. Growing pains were expected, it's how the No. 67 overall selection in the 2024 NFL Draft adjusts day to day that's the biggest factor right now.
The Commanders must be thrilled with Coleman's development. Giving him starting responsibilities right out of the gate is a gamble - especially considering the investment made in Daniels. However, there's no doubt whatsoever he's earning the position through exceptional work ethic, taking things one practice at a time, and producing the goods when called upon.
Nobody could ask any more from Coleman so far. There will be bumps in the road throughout his first year in the pros. Coming out on the other end with more positives than negatives is a lofty yet attainable objective.
Coleman is confident he can be the franchise left tackle Washington's missed since Trent Williams departed via trade for the San Francisco 49ers. It can still go either way, but he's on course to achieve some short-term objectives.
