Commanders OT Brandon Coleman thrives

Brandon Coleman is under more pressure than most third-round rookies around the league. The Washington Commanders are providing the offensive tackle with a chance to become their Day 1 starter on Jayden Daniels' blindside. That's a significant responsibility for someone so young, so cementing confidence in his capabilities was the primary objective.

Coleman took time to get going as expected. There was always going to be a period of adjustment and he's not the finished product from a technical standpoint by any stretch. However, the former TCU star is starting to establish himself as the No. 1 left tackle ahead of veteran Cornelius Lucas over the last few practices.

How Coleman coped with 1-on-1 drills in full pads was another important measuring stick. It's not easy versus edge rushers who are out for blood, but the first-year pro was nothing short of flawless in pass protection according to those in attendance.

Reporters commented that Coleman's exceptional footwork, ability to mirror movements in tight windows, and core functional strength made it incredibly difficult for any pass-rusher unfortunate enough to come in his path. This was the most impressive element of his camp production so far, matched by more accomplished protection and communication in scrimmages to raise excitement further.

Placing Coleman on the edge in Week 1 at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers remains a gamble. There will be growing pains and every rookie tackle gets plenty of NFL baptisms versus more dominant edge performers. At the same time, the Commanders would have a hard task leaving him out of the starting lineup if the same trend continues in the weeks ahead.

Regardless of whether Coleman starts to open the season or not, he looks like someone who can become a long-term option at some stage. How long that'll take remains to be seen, but the impressive offensive lineman is giving the coaching staff plenty to think about after an outstanding surge in recent days.
