5 critical observations from Commanders 2024 training camp Day 7
By Dean Jones
Benjamin St-Juste back with a bang
There was some concern when Benjamin St-Juste suffered an injury complication over an earlier training camp practice. The veteran cornerback was held out briefly, but it didn't seem too serious and he was back for Day 7.
St-Juste is the starting outside corner and arguably the Washington Commanders' best option in coverage. The former third-round selection returned with a bang, performing well during 1-on-1 drills. He even managed to secure a turnover in scrimmages according to those in attendance.
The Minnesota product displayed outstanding awareness to read veteran free-agent signing Marcus Mariota's eyes. St-Juste jumped the route and secured what turned out to be an easy interception. This was a big confidence boost for the player, who is responding positively to the improved teachings of Dan Quinn and Joe Whitt Jr. - two accomplished coaches when it comes to defensive back development.
Washington's corners are holding their own. This was a big concern heading into camp after the inconsistencies displayed by St-Juste and Forbes last season. Second-round pick Mike Sainristil's arrival solidifies the interior coverage, but getting burned on the perimeter is a problem Quinn and Whitt can't let this trend continue if the Commanders want to stand any chance of progressing defensively next season.
There's a different urgency surrounding St-Juste this offseason. He's getting another chance to prove his worth and boasts the size and physicality Quinn normally looks for in his cornerbacks. This is also a contract year for the Montreal Cegep du Vieux High School product, so a monumental effort is needed to convince the Commanders he's worthy of a long-term commitment.
St-Juste is alleviating concerns with his improved consistency and rising confidence over Washington's training camp. Bouncing back so positively after his slight injury concern was another positive. Fans are approaching this with cautious optimism. Getting it done when the real action arrives is the only thing they're looking for heading into Year 4 of his professional career.
