5 critical observations from Commanders 2024 training camp Day 7
By Dean Jones
There was more anticipation in the air than usual for Day 7 of training camp. It was the second full day in pads and Washington Commanders head coach Dan Quinn revealed the session would feature 1-on-1 battles throughout.
This is when tempers tend to flare, so watching how players keep their emotions in check and harness their aggression is another important step in Quinn's evaluations. It was fiery and physical, but it never threatened to spill over into something more.
That's a big positive. It shows players are adhering to Quinn's demands for improved discipline and self-policing when things can get out of hand. This resulted in a competitive and beneficial practice rather than worrying about altercations and things getting too chippy.
With this in mind, here are five critical observations from Day 7 of Commanders 2024 training camp in Ashburn.

Trench warfare sets the tone
Watching how the trenches performed in full pads during 1-on-1 drills was a tremendous measuring stick at this stage of the Washington Commanders' preparations. Offensive and defensive linemen set the tone throughout. It was fast with some heavy-hitting attached, but it made everybody better.
Sam Cosmi and Jonathan Allen had a running battle that saw both talking trash but nothing more according to those in attendance. Stud defensive tackle Daron Payne also caught the eye. He looks well-conditioned and ready to bounce back after an indifferent 2023 campaign. His bull rush, in particular, seems to be coming along encouragingly under the improved coaching staff.
Games are won and lost in the trenches. The Commanders didn't have much to shout about in this critical area of the field last season. There's still a long way to go, but the signs so far are extremely positive.
Players like Cosmi, Allen, and Payne will be at the forefront of any success that comes Washington's way at the line of scrimmage. It's also a responsibility these three talented veterans are taking seriously in pursuit of brighter fortunes for the organization.
