5 critical observations from Commanders 2024 training camp Day 5

Jayden Daniels surging clear
It came as no surprise to see Jayden Daniels with the first-team unit on the first day of padded practices. The Washington Commanders continue to split reps between the No. 2 overall selection in the 2024 NFL Draft and veteran free-agent signing Marcus Mariota, but this was the clearest sign yet that the rookie will be under center in Week 1 at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
That's not earth-shattering news, especially given Mariota's struggles over camp so far. Daniels is coping well with the significant responsibilities on his young shoulders. It's not perfect by any stretch, but nobody expected it to be at this early stage of his development.
Daniels caught the eye once again on Day 5. There were a couple of wayward throws as pressure arrived much faster. However, the Heisman Trophy winner stayed composed during a polished display overall according to those in attendance.
The former LSU star looked the part during the team's red-zone drills. Daniels got the football into tight windows and scored two touchdowns during this period when Austin Ekeler and Olamide Zaccheaus went into the end zone. Some throws he'd like to have back, but it's all part of the process.
Just how much longer Dan Quinn will leave it before formally announcing Daniels as QB1 remains to be seen. The head coach stated that when he's ready, everyone will know. Based on the first five days of camp, it won't be much longer before the dual-threat gets the keys to Washington's kingdom.
Everyone is behind Daniels. He's done nothing to diminish expectations since joining the Commanders. He'll have a bigger bullseye on his back being a high-end draft pick, but the mentality, magnetism, and outstanding work ethic are helping the signal-caller take everything in his stride.
Daniels has the aura of a franchise quarterback. His first NFL padded practice was yet another challenge completed.
