5 critical observations from Commanders 2024 training camp Day 2
By Dean Jones
Austin Ekeler's impact
Austin Ekeler opting to join the Washington Commanders in free agency caused a stir. The veteran running back couldn't reach an agreement with the Los Angeles Chargers and took his chances elsewhere. He felt this was the best setup to prolong his career and make a significant difference working within a backfield committee.
Ekeler made no secret of the fact he was looking to sign somewhere with an established running back already in place. The Commanders have that in Brian Robinson Jr., so this made a ton of sense for the veteran. Especially considering his former head coach Anthony Lynn is on Dan Quinn's high-profile staff.
Some questioned whether Ekeler made the right call leaving the Chargers, but their loss is Washington's gain. Looking at the impression he's making over the early stages of training camp, he stands to make a lasting contribution - albeit with fewer carries and targets - next season.
The former undrafted free agent out of Western Colorado looked explosive and elusive on Day 2 of training camp. Ekeler exploited gaps well and broke off some big gains by making defenders miss. This is still in shorts with no shells or pads, but it is a testament to what the dual threat could potentially bring to a competitive setting.
The Commanders are expecting Ekeler to upgrade the void left by Antonio Gibson after he signed for the New England Patriots in free agency. His previous accomplishments suggest he's more than capable of attaining this feat. Taking some of the pressure off rather than being a bell-cow is also something working in his favor.
Watching the running back dynamic unfold as camp progresses will be key. Looking at the way Ekeler and Robinson have imposed themselves over the opening exchanges, this has the scope to become an outstanding tandem to go alongside rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels in 2024.
Considering what the Commanders got Ekeler for financially, it looks like a superb piece of business.
