Commanders linebacking corps set the tone

After the linebacking group became a constant source of frustration under previous head coach Ron Rivera, the Washington Commanders looked to rectify this as a matter of urgency. Adam Peters significantly strengthened the unit through free agency and the draft. Things look a lot more promising after some outstanding investments.

It came as no surprise to see the Commanders' linebacking corps set the tone immediately. They were a revelation on Day 2 of training camp according to those in attendance. Frankie Luvu and rookie Jordan Magee, in particular, came in for special praise.

Luvu is a marquee arrival from the Carolina Panthers after rising quickly to become one of the league's most underrated second-level defenders over the last two seasons. He's completely shifted the energy and mindset in the building, which he attributes to the unrivaled enthusiasm of coach Ken Norton Jr. based on comments via the team's website.

"He brings the energy, especially on days like this in camp. The room can get a little quiet with long days, getting out of the meeting room, but Ken [Norton Jr.] always brings that energy every day. It's gonna be a fun season working with Ken. I'm looking forward to it."

If Luvu can keep this up and develop a prolific partnership with perennial All-Pro presence Bobby Wagner, this has the potential to become one of the NFL's most dominant linebacker pairings. It'll also help others such as Jamin Davis make better use of the exceptional athletic attributes at his disposal.

There's also a lot to like about the way Magee's applied himself since joining the Commanders. Not much was expected of the No. 139 overall selection in the 2024 NFL Draft initially. However, his seamless transition and ability to produce among more experienced players indicate an important role could be in the offing if things continue similarly over camp and the preseason.

This unit looks like one of the team's strengths heading into the season. It's been a long time since Commanders fans have said that about their linebackers.
