The Washington Commanders were in full pads for their final training camp practice before another stern test of their credentials on the road. Dan Quinn's squad travels to the Miami Dolphins, where they will take part in a joint practice before embarking on their second preseason contest. This will be another important measuring tool with final cuts on the not-too-distant horizon.

Quinn seems happy with the way things are going right now. The Commanders are dealing with a few frustrating injuries, but the energy and purpose in the building is night and day compared to last season. There's an added sense of professionalism about the way Washington is going about its business - something that can hopefully propel this storied franchise to brighter days this season and beyond.

Players are running out of sessions to convince those in power they're worthy of involvement. This is the time to put up or shut up. Those who thrive in the proverbial pressure cooker will be rewarded. Those who fail to meet specific targets will be moved on with little fanfare attached.

It's a fascinating time for fans but a nervous period for many players. With that being said, here are five critical observations from Day 13 of Washington's training camp in Ashburn.

Martavis Bryant's ambition

The Washington Commanders caused a stir before practice with the signing of Martavis Bryant, the talented yet troubled wide receiver who's not played a competitive NFL game since 2018. Dan Quinn seemed suitably impressed after seeing the player closely on the Dallas Cowboys once his lengthy suspension was lifted in 2023. This also lays down the gauntlet to others in the wide receiver room who might not be reaching the required expectations.

Whether Bryant can surge into roster contention in such a short timeframe remains to be seen. The former Clemson star seems ready to fight for his spot and learn as much as possible to smooth his critical integration based on comments via the team's website.

"I've been through a lot. I don't give up on myself. I never gave up. I've always been a fighter, and I'll continue to do that. Whatever they need me to do, man. Just trying to get back and get better, learn every day, learn from my coaches, learn from my teammates."

Bryant got his first taste of practice on Day 13, making a couple of nice blocks and getting some first-team reps according to those in attendance. It'll be interesting to see how things unfold, but time is of the essence as the 2014 fourth-round selection looks for one more NFL opportunity.
