5 critical observations from Commanders 2024 training camp Day 12
By Dean Jones
Commanders' blossoming connection
Dan Quinn stated that the tight end production emerged as one of the areas he was most pleased about in the Washington Commanders' narrow preseason loss at the New York Jets. One blossoming connection, in particular, continues to catch the eye at training camp.
There were questions surrounding Zach Ertz following his free-agent arrival. The veteran tight end was one of the league's best pass-catchers at the position once upon a time. Although he's approaching the end of his prolific career, there is still some good football left looking at the way he's applied himself so far.
Rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels seems to trust Ertz fully, which is a good sign. The pair connected for another impressive gain during 11-on-11 according to those in attendance on Day 12 of training camp. This resulted in a big gain - something that could potentially continue when the real action commences.
Ertz might not get the lion's share of targets in the passing game with Ben Sinnott ready to take the league by storm. However, offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury knows how to best utilize his skill set from their time together at the Arizona Cardinals. That leaves plenty of hope he can enjoy a late-career renaissance and help Daniels transition smoothly along the way.
Jamin Davis' growth
It's been a big summer for Jamin Davis. The Commanders are tasking the former first-round selection with a pivotal position switch. There have been some good moments and plenty of bad thrown in for good measure. But gaining so many reps in the preseason opener will do wonders for his overall confidence.
Davis will still spend time at the defensive second level alongside Frankie Luvu and Bobby Wagner, especially on early downs. Washington needs more explosiveness across their pass rush after trading Montez Sweat and Chase Young. It's been a tricky transition, but something that Dan Quinn seemed impressed by when speaking to the media before practice.
The Kentucky product is placing more emphasis on film study this offseason to cope with the position change. Any additional knowledge is only going to assist his cause, but this is a constant evaluation before the Commanders determine what his role will be next season.
He's got the physical intangibles needed to flourish. Davis is also in the best possible hands with Quinn and defensive coordinator Joe Whitt Jr. leading the charge. The player's roster spot looks cemented despite what some in the media have speculated. Whether he can perform well enough to get another deal from the Commanders is another matter.
