Commanders rookie injuries

The Washington Commanders are expecting big things from their 2024 rookie class. However, they are currently experiencing some injury concerns with draft picks and undrafted free agents after most got plenty of reps during their preseason opener at the New York Jets.

Dan Quinn revealed that Jordan Magee suffered a knee injury and will miss some time. This is a body blow to the linebacker, who left a tremendous early impression and looked set for a prominent role on the rotation. Hopefully, this remains the case and he will get back soon.

Brandon Coleman, Johnny Newton, and Sam Hartman are also day-to-day or week-to-week according to Quinn. The Commanders won't have the undrafted free-agent quarterback available at the Miami Dolphins, which is disappointing for the player after he caught the eye before getting hurt against the Jets.

Erring on the side of caution is wise at this stage of Washington's preparations. There's no need to panic, but ensuring further complications don't arise is the primary objective. This bears more significance with Newton - a player who's been missing for most of the offseason thanks to several frustrating ailments.

Commanders kicking concerns

Fans are becoming increasingly concerned about the Commanders' kicking conundrum. Veteran free-agent signing Brandon McManus' release was the right thing to do after sexual assault allegations became public knowledge, but it's caused a problem that could impact the team's chances for genuine progression next season.

Ramiz Ahmed and Riley Patterson - claimed off waivers from the Jacksonville Jaguars - are currently fighting it out for the starting gig. Neither is particularly standing out, which proved to be the case once again on Day 12 of training camp.

Both kickers struggled with accuracy throughout the session according to those in attendance. It's getting to the stage where general manager Adam Peters must take drastic action. However, the new front office leader might be waiting for final cuts to arrive for a better indication of which available kickers that don't quite make the grade elsewhere could improve matters.

Until then, Ahmed and Patterson will remain on board. But looking at how things are unfolding right now, one could make a strong case for Washington's starting kicker in Week 1 at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers not being on the roster right now.
