5 critical observations from Commanders 2024 training camp Day 10

Unheralded cornerbacks make plays
The Washington Commanders came into training camp with concerns surrounding their cornerback unit. Second-round rookie Mike Sainristil has alleviated these on the interior. Things are also looking more promising on the outside as players respond extremely well to the improved teachings of head coach Dan Quinn and defensive coordinator Joe Whitt Jr.
Fans are approaching this with cautious optimism. While performances leave reasons for hope, getting it done in a competitive setting will be the most pivotal factor above all else. That'll be the difference between success and failure. Coming through some tough-looking challenges over the first few weeks of the campaign is crucial.
Day 10 of training camp saw a couple of unheralded cornerbacks impose themselves. Opportunities to secure depth positions are there for those who prove their worth. Roster spots are going to be earned rather than handed out under the new regime, which seems to be having the desired effect so far.
Kyu Blu Kelly is an interesting case study. The former fifth-round selection out of Stanford spent his rookie campaign in 2023 on three different teams. He's got the size and physical scope to be productive. Putting it all together consistently remains his biggest stumbling block.
Kelly came up with a tremendous pass breakup against Luke McCaffrey during an impressive session from the player according to those in attendance. Another to catch the eye was undrafted free agent Chigozie Anusiem, who got a pretty decent contract from the Commanders after quickly emerging as a coveted prospect half the league was reportedly looking to acquire.
Anusiem managed to come up with an outstanding play, diverting a goal-line pass intended for Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint to prevent a sure-fire touchdown. This is the best way to get noticed. How the former Colorado State star performs in the preseason will be the biggest factor in whether he makes the 53-man roster or not.
Both Kelly and Anusiem should feel confident. But they aren't alone in the cornerback room in that regard.
