Commanders defense coming together

Joe Whitt Jr. is a no-nonsense coach looking to get more from the Washington Commanders' defense in 2024. This star-studded unit failed to meet some lofty targets during the previous campaign. A roster makeover and a much-improved schematic strategy could shift this trajectory.

It's a difficult evaluation at camp, but the signs are promising nonetheless. Almost every position group has raised performance. The trenches look rejuvenated under Whitt's guidance. Bobby Wagner and Frankie Luvu's presence at the defensive second level is another major boost in pursuit of better fortunes during the 2024 season.

Whitt seemed pleased with how things are progressing based on comments to the media after Day 10 of training camp. The next step he wants from this group is to create turnovers. After that, he believes everything else will fall into place.

"I feel good about the speed of the defense and how they're trying to get to the ball. The physicality, especially the guys up front. I think they've done a really nice job. I'm pleased with that. And now the one thing that I would like to see a little bit more of is, is ball production. We got a couple balls out today, punched one out, we intercepted one. But the ball is life and we need more of it. And so, that's one area that we can improve."

The Commanders have the personnel capable of becoming a surprise some offenses won't see coming in 2024. Health will play a big factor, but Whitt and his outstanding staff will ensure they're all ready to wreak havoc from the moment they step onto the field in Week 1.

It's not going to be a bed of roses all the time. The Commanders will find life difficult on occasion. Even so, fans can rest assured there will be no shirking responsibilities as long as Whitt is leading this group. That's arguably the biggest positive above all else.
