Commanders QB Jayden Daniels makes strong start

All eyes were on Jayden Daniels during his first training camp practice with the Washington Commanders. The No. 2 overall selection in the 2024 NFL Draft carries the heavy weight of expectancy on his shoulders. He's made a smooth transition to the setup, but watching the signal-caller's progress throughout camp will be a better indication of what he might be capable of as a rookie.

It was the first day, so take it as you will, but Daniels got off to an imposing start according to those in attendance. It was a pretty flawless showing from the Heisman Trophy winner aside from one batted pass. Touchdowns were plentiful as the Commanders focused primarily on red-zone scrimmages. One throw to running back Brian Robinson Jr. was the undoubted highlight and showcased how special he can be in the right environment.

This outstanding start was further highlighted by wide receiver Terry McLaurin during his media availability after practice. The veteran Pro Bowler acknowledged Daniels' feel for the game and his ability to communicate as elements that set him apart based on comments via the team's website.

"He naturally has a good feel of where to position the ball, whether it's an in-breaking route, out-breaking route, a ball down the field. A lot of the things, he just naturally has the ability to have a feel for the game, which is very unique for any quarterback, but let alone a rookie. The more reps we get, it's just gonna make us better. The good thing about it is, he's extremely communicative and I am too, so that really helps the relationship grow quicker. I just think the best thing for us to continue to talk about the reps that we have in practice in the film room."

Daniels needs to keep this up for the entirety of camp. Just how much time he'll see on the field in the preseason is anyone's guess, but it won't be much longer before he's officially named the starter despite splitting reps with Marcus Mariota right now.

The Commanders believe they have something special on their hands with Daniels. It's hard to argue that fact based on what the former LSU star's displayed since joining the ranks.
