Commanders WR Kazmeir Allen impresses

The top three or four spots in the Washington Commanders' wide receiver room appear set. Several others are fighting for one or two positions. Making a strong impression over training camp and the preseason is critical in their quest to make the squad.

This will be one of the most fascinating dynamics to watch in the coming weeks. One player who made a head start on the rest with an outstanding first day of practice was Kazmeir Allen, who's on his second go-around with the Commanders and is looking to secure his spot after narrowly missing out last summer.

Allen was a highly coveted undrafted free agent last spring. The versatile offensive weapon pushed hard, but previous head coach Ron Rivera preferred others when push came to shove. The UCLA product spent last season on the practice squad to hone his craft. It seems to have the desired effect based on initial impressions at camp.

There was a lot to like about the way Allen applied himself on Day 1 of camp according to those in attendance. The wideout caught two touchdown passes during scrimmages - both from rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels. This was the best way to get noticed, but there is a lot of hard work ahead.

An outstanding opening day is exactly the confidence boost Allen needs. This wasn't with full pads or even shells on, but it's a positive development nonetheless. If the second-year pro can continue to make his presence felt in the passing game and also excel as a kick returner, he'll give those in power plenty to think about when the time for final cuts arrives.

How Allen performs in the preseason during a more typical game-day environment could be more telling for Allen. The new NFL kickoff rules should give him more chances to showcase his outstanding elusiveness in this key discipline. If the same trend continues in the coming weeks, he'll be a player to watch closely.
