5 Commanders players who could get demoted during 2024 training camp
By Dean Jones
Quan Martin - Commanders DB
- Current status: Nickelback No. 1
According to ESPN's depth chart, Quan Martin is slotted as the team's starting nickel cornerback heading into camp. That's going to change quickly if Mike Sainristil has anything to say about it.
The Washington Commanders are expecting big things from the former Michigan standout. Sainristil made a tremendous impression during his seamless transition from college to the pros. Dan Quinn and Adam Peters expect him to accumulate starting reps immediately, which would force a change of direction with Martin's usage along the way.
This isn't a slight on Martin by any stretch. He came on encouragingly when finally given opportunities last season. He's got the physical profile to thrive under Quinn and Joe Whitt Jr.'s guidance. Just how he'll be deployed isn't clear, but the situation should sort itself out over camp.
Even if Martin doesn't get starting slot duties thanks to Sainristil's arrival, the Illinois product should carve out a decent role for himself. Getting creative to maximize his outstanding skill set is crucial in the pursuit of further improvements entering Year 2 of his professional career.
Dante Fowler Jr. - Commanders DE
- Current status: Left DE No. 1
The Commanders had to bolster their edge rushing options this offseason. Trading Montez Sweat and Chase Young meant this became a necessity after those who filled the void over the second half of 2023 didn't capitalize on their respective opportunities. K.J. Henry flashed promise, but it was relatively mundane aside from that.
Dan Quinn brought along some trusted associates from his time on the Dallas Cowboys. Dante Fowler Jr. is slotted as the starting defensive end opposite Dorance Armstrong Jr. right now. That's a sketchy projection, but things will become clearer over the early stages of camp.
Fowler has a lot of nice qualities and some dependable NFL production to boot. He might not have lived up to the heights anticipated of a No. 3 overall selection, but his 10 sacks in two seasons under Quinn in Dallas are reasons for encouragement.
Complacency cannot become an issue for Fowler. He's got Henry, Clelin Ferrell, and perhaps even Jamin Davis vying for playing time on the edge. Anything less than supreme consistency could see him occupy rotational duties when the regular season arrives.
