5 Commanders players who could get cut after the 2024 NFL Draft
By Dean Jones
Jake Fromm - Commanders QB
It's no secret what the Washington Commanders' biggest decision is when the 2024 NFL Draft arrives. Those in power must select the right quarterback at No. 2 overall. Anything less would put a severe dent in the team's plans to become a playoff powerhouse under Adam Peters and Dan Quinn.
Four quarterbacks are being considered. Washington has the pick of the bunch after Caleb Williams goes to the Chicago Bears at No. 1. Each signal-caller spent time with the organization this week, which was the final chance for Peters and others in positions of power to get a good perception of their characteristics and what they might be able to offer.
The Commanders have set things up nicely for their new signal-caller. They'll have a strong-looking coaching staff capable of nurturing their talent. Washington also secured the services of veteran Marcus Mariota - a former No. 2 pick himself who'll be able to provide sound advice on how to handle the pressure that comes with being a high-end draft selection.
Jeff Driskel was also brought in to provide another veteran presence and boost competition throughout the offseason schedule. Much will depend on how many quarterbacks the Commanders plan on taking through onto their 53-man roster, but things don't look too promising for Jake Fromm once Washington chooses its next face of the franchise.
Peters has declared a desire to keep four quarterbacks throughout the summer and take it from there. This could ensure Fromm gets a reprieve, but that will change if the Commanders also acquire another signal-caller when undrafted free agency begins. Something that cannot be completely dismissed if Peters thinks there is value to be had.
The chances of Fromm making the roster are slim. Coaches should know what he is by this point, so replacing him with someone with arguably more upside is a realistic avenue of pursuit if the right opportunity presents itself.
