5 bold Washington Commanders predictions vs. the Browns in Week 5
By Dean Jones
Jeremy McNichols scores two touchdowns
The Washington Commanders have some slight concerns in their running back room. Brian Robinson Jr. missed the first two days of practice this week with a knee issue and will likely have some sort of designation on the final injury report. Austin Ekeler missed the Week 4 triumph at the Arizona Cardinals with a concussion, but he's confident of being cleared in time for this weekend.
Regardless of whether Robinson and Ekeler suit up, the Commanders would be wise to err on the side of caution to prevent any unnecessary complications. This might mean more involvement for Jeremy McNichols, who left a big impression versus the Cardinals with limited involvement.
McNichols ran in for two scores from eight touches and looked explosive enough to make a difference when called upon. He averaged 8.5 yards per carry en route to 68 rushing yards. Much will depend on Robinson and Ekeler's prognosis, but the Commanders could be counting on him heavily once again in Week 5.
The former fifth-round pick out of Boise State didn't feature much on the offensive rotation over the last three games. But if he gets another run with Robinson and Ekeler less than 100 percent, opportunities for another multi-score game should arrive.
Commanders win by 10+ points
The Commanders are building some significant momentum. Most of that has been on the road over the last fortnight, but they finally get the chance to showcase a much-improved football product on home soil versus the Cleveland Browns.
There were signs something special could be brewing against the New York Giants in Week 2. That would have been a blowout had the Commanders found ways to turn their countless red-zone opportunities into touchdowns. Fortunately for head coach Dan Quinn, kicker Austin Seibert was on hand to nail all seven of his field goals to set a new franchise record.
This will be a more difficult test. It's the best defense the Commanders have faced so far, but they can be vulnerable. Fans will be driving Washington every step of the way after Magic Johnson's passionate rallying cry, so it would be a big surprise if the players didn't respond accordingly to put on a sensational display at Northwest Stadium.
One could make a strong case for this being a trap game. Quinn must keep the intensity high and match the inevitable physical challenge coming their way. If the Commanders can do that, their fairytale run to start the 2024 season will continue in fine style.
