5 biggest Commanders surprises through the first quarter of 2024 season

Commanders offensive line cohesion
Adam Peters knew what one of his biggest conundrums was heading into his first offseason as general manager. If the Washington Commanders were intent on finding a future franchise quarterback in the 2024 NFL Draft, they had to provide their incoming rookie with an offensive line capable of giving him a fighting chance.
It's so far, so good on that front. The investments made by Peters are paying off immediately. Nick Allegretti and Tyler Biadasz have been a revelation on the interior alongside stud right guard Sam Cosmi. Andrew Wylie is performing much better than expected on the edge. Cornelius Lucas and rookie third-rounder Brandon Coleman are sharing left tackle responsibilities and thriving.
Credit must also go to offensive line coach Bobby Johnson. He was scapegoated by the New York Giants after their protection decreased to abysmal levels in 2023. But looking at the way he's cemented cohesion in Washington - and in double-quick time - it's evident he wasn't the problem.
Health is the biggest stumbling block with this unit. If everyone gets a clear run of luck on the injury front, expect this area to continue its ascension into an area of real strength. It's been a long time since the Commanders could say that in the offensive trenches.
Jayden Daniels' transition
The Commanders were confident they had found their franchise quarterback in Jayden Daniels. His on-field production and flawless mindset convinced those in power during their pre-draft assessments en route to taking him at No. 2 overall. Hopes were high that he could make an immediate impact. Not many predicted such a smooth transition.
Every rookie quarterback typically goes through complications during their adjustment from college to the pros. This is a steep step up to the pinnacle of the profession. Some take longer to acclimate than others, but Daniels has passed every test with flying colors.
Daniels is on a meteoric rise to superstardom. His performances over the last two weeks were nothing short of extraordinary. The Heisman Trophy winner out of LSU is poised and accurate under center. He has instilled belief into the entire franchise and thrives in the biggest moments. The best part? He's only going to get better.
It's becoming harder for Washington to keep everyone's feet on the ground thanks in no small part to Daniels' extraordinary introduction to NFL life. If the same trend continues throughout the campaign, the Commanders won't be too far away from a playoff berth.
