The NFL preseason has lost its sense of importance over the years. Games have decreased significantly and less emphasis is being placed on getting starting players reps. When the league goes to an 18-game campaign sooner rather than later, it'll disintegrate entirely.

That's not to say the Washington Commanders haven't benefitted greatly from their preseason engagements this year. Turning over two-thirds of the roster meant chemistry had to be developed. Practice can only do so much. Head coach Dan Quinn was right to have some starters on the field over the opening two warmup contests before giving everyone a rest against the New England Patriots.

Preseason is also an opportunity for those lower down the depth chart to stand out. Making plays in this sort of environment can make a big difference to some in their quest to carve out roles for themselves. That's not the case for everyone, but we'll find out for sure once general manager Adam Peters trims down his 90-man squad to an initial 53.

With this in mind, here are four winners and three losers from Washington's 2024 preseason slate.

Winners and losers from the Commanders 2024 preseason

Winner No. 1

Dyami Brown - Commanders WR

A heartwarming story is emerging with underachieving wide receiver Dyami Brown. Many thought he'd be made surplus to requirements under the new regime after another anonymous campaign in 2023. After getting one last chance to prove his worth, the former third-round selection took full advantage.

Brown's sense of urgency is evident. He's relishing the chance for a fresh start, maximizing every rep and displaying the athletic ability to stretch the field that the Commanders envisaged when they picked him out of North Carolina. The difference this year? He's made plays in the preseason rather than just in shorts and shells over camp.

With Jahan Dotson out of the equation, opportunity knocks for others. Brown's stock has surged immensely throughout the summer, so he could be more involved than even the brightest optimist anticipated when competitive action begins.
