Commanders could lose Eric Bieniemy to the Chargers

The Los Angeles Chargers are in danger of wasting Justin Herbert's prime. Despite having a franchise quarterback and talent across the board, they cannot seem to get over the hump under Brandon Staley, who oversaw a blown 27-0 playoff lead last season to cast further doubt over his ability to successfully lead this franchise long-term.

There is more than enough on the Chargers roster to suggest another playoff bid is well within their capabilities. Residing in the AFC West with the defending Super Bowl champions won't be easy, but the Denver Broncos and Las Vegas Raiders could be transitioning to make Staley's men clear second favorites.

Reaching the playoffs is the minimum objective for the Chargers all things considered. This is a roster stacked with legitimate NFL playmakers on both sides of the football, which means there are no more excuses for Staley not to get this club deep into Super Bowl contention.

If the head coach cannot reach some lofty expectations, then it could be his last campaign in the California sunshine. And who better to guide Herbert throughout his peak years than Eric Bieniemy?

If Bieniemy works his magic with Sam Howell on the Washington Commanders in 2023 - coupled with his role in Patrick Mahomes' development - then it might be enough for the Chargers to make him one of their top coaching priorities.
