Jamin Davis - Commanders LB

This one would be the biggest shock of all.

Jamin Davis made the best out of a bad situation over the last two seasons. The former first-round pick was given no consistent help alongside him at the defensive second level as the linebacking corps became an afterthought under Ron Rivera and Jack Del Rio. He performed well without ever reaching exceptional standards, but it wasn't enough for the Washington Commanders to trigger his fifth-year option this offseason.

This raises the stakes considerably. Davis is officially in the final year of his rookie deal and must convince those in power he's worth keeping around long-term. He's also embarked on a crucial position switch at training camp, spending the majority of his time as an edge rusher to see what he can potentially bring to this key area of the field.

The switch stands to make more of the immense physical attributes at Davis' disposal. There have been some growing pains according to those in attendance. Some even speculated that the Kentucky product's roster status isn't guaranteed based on how things are going right now.

Bobby Wagner and Frankie Luvu are the preferred linebacking tandem, with good reason. Dan Quinn stated the Commanders could use Davis alongside them on first and second downs. However, the rapid emergence of rookie Jordan Magee might see the player get extended involvement right out of the gate if he comes through Washington's preseason slate unscathed.

From a depth standpoint if nothing else, Davis should make the roster. It also makes no financial sense to cut ties with $4.38 million in dead cap and no savings attached to his early departure.

Adam Peters has already shown he's willing to do whatever it takes to make this team better. Cutting Davis would be one of the more drastic measures, but the front-office leader won't hesitate if he genuinely believes it's the right thing to do.

There's also a chance Davis becomes trade bait if the Commanders want to get something back in return. However, removing him from the roster entirely seems foolish when one factors everything into the equation.
