Commanders could need a QB

Even though Ron Rivera stated on numerous occasions that the Washington Commanders would move forward with Sam Howell as their starting quarterback in 2023, many in the media thought it was a smokescreen. But after ignoring prospects such as Will Levis and Hendon Hooker during the draft, the head coach had the courage of his convictions.

Howell learned from the sidelines as a rookie and caught the eye during his one start in Week 18 against the Dallas Cowboys. The Commanders brought in Jacoby Brissett as veteran insurance, but the former fifth-round selection will likely get the first shot of finally providing the organization with a level of stability under center not seen much throughout Rivera's tenure so far.

This confidence is heartwarming. But it doesn't alter the fact this represents a major gamble - one that might cost Rivera his job if it all goes wrong.

Hopefully, this worst-case scenario won't come to fruition. If it does, then the new ownership consortium led by Josh Harris will no doubt make their first draft all about bringing a long-term quarterback into the fold.

It looks like a fantastic class of signal-callers in 2024. Self-professed Commanders fan Caleb Williams tops the list, but it's unlikely Washington will be bad enough to land the No. 1 overall selection all things considered.

Others in contention include Drake Maye, Michael Penix Jr., Quinn Ewers, Michael Pratt, Sam Hartman, and Jordan Travis.
