James Smith-Williams - Commanders DE

All the focus has been on Chase Young's triumphant return to the Washington Commanders' defensive line throughout training camp so far. The former No. 2 overall selection is without the knee brace and looks back to explosive self, which means great news for a defense that could become the league's best in 2023.

There is added positivity surrounding Young, but his situation remains precarious based on the last two seasons, Therefore, it's essential those lower down the depth chart are productive and ready to rock when the real action arrives.

Efe Obada continues to look the part in a rotational role and is a dependable backup presence. The Commanders are also starting to see flashes from K.J. Henry, their fifth-round selection during the 2023 NFL Draft that has the physical profile to contribute immediately.

What this means for the future of James Smith-Williams is unclear. It looked for all the smart money as if he could be the No. 3 defensive end option behind Young and Sweat, but that might not be guaranteed based on what we've witnessed throughout camp so far.

Smith-Williams has the experience edge on Henry and is arguably more explosive than Obada. But his quest for involvement is hanging by a thread considering all the ascending players alongside him on the defensive line.
