4 established alphas on the Washington Commanders roster in 2024
Frankie Luvu - Commanders LB
While he may have just signed with the Washington Commanders this spring, Frankie Luvu is a true alpha on the field. This wasn't always the case, but he rose to these lofty heights during his final two seasons with the Carolina Panthers.
The Commanders have been searching for a feisty presence on the defensive second level for years. Jamin Davis hasn’t panned out like the team hoped. There are serious talks of him moving to the edge in certain situations or full-time. With the addition of Luvu, the defense could see great improvement.
Luvu started his career with the New York Jets as a rotational depth piece before finding his footing with the Panthers. In three seasons with the struggling franchise, he became a critical part of their defense. The former undrafted free agent was one of the few shining lights during their two-win campaign in 2024.
His play earned the Washington State product a three-year, $31 million contract. He is a perfect fit in Quinn and Whitt’s defense. Luvu is a true do-it-all linebacker who is always near the ball, displays incredible explosiveness playing downhill, and works to each sideline with ferocity.
Luvu is very productive and is effective in all facets of defensive play at the position. He has the fluidity and athleticism to cover wide receivers. He's also got the get-off and freakish speed to attack offensive linemen relentlessly as a pass rusher.
Because of this skill set, the second-level enforcer turned into one of the best players in his position with an argument to be one of the five best in the league. Had the Panthers enjoyed more overall success, Luvu would be more renowned.
Luvu was forced to play MIKE linebacker instead of being the ROVER linebacker in Carolina, which allowed him to play more freely. He’ll play the WILL role next to Bobby Wagner and be the free-range second-level defender that has quickly made him a force.
His playmaking ability will be a great boost for the Commanders' defense. As a former alpha with the Panthers, he’ll certainly be one in D.C.
