4 critical observations from Commanders 2023 training camp Day 12
By Dean Jones
Commanders CB Danny Johnson showed out
Compared to other cornerbacks on the Washington Commanders, the performances of Danny Johnson have gone relatively under the radar. But that doesn't make them any less impressive as the player looks to earn a prominent place on the rotation once again.
The Commanders recognized Johnson's contribution by handing him a new two-year deal to prevent him from leaving in free agency. This was a strong vote of confidence in the veteran, but there's absolutely no room for complacency after those in power spent their first two picks of the 2023 NFL Draft on defensive backs.
It would be a shock if Johnson didn't make the 53-man roster right now, but anything can happen with warmup games on the horizon. That's why a practice like this was so important for his confidence with bigger challenges awaiting.
According to those in attendance, Johsnon had a fantastic session on Tuesday. He looked assured in coverage and came up with some telling stops that are sure to have caught the eye of Ron Rivera and defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio as part of their ongoing evaluations.
If Emmanuel Forbes, Kendall Fuller, and Benjamin St-Juste are locked to start and Quan Martin operates in the nickel role, that leaves probably three spaces for the rest. Competition is fierce and what happens in the preseason could make all the difference, but Johnson has the credentials needed to secure a roster spot comfortably.
