Commanders could have something in Quan Martin

When the Washington Commanders ignored help on the offensive line in favor of taking their second-straight defensive back to begin the 2023 NFL Draft, it left many scratching their heads in proverbial disbelief. However, listening to others outside of the building has never been Ron Rivera's preferred approach to roster building looking at his career to date.

Despite needs elsewhere, the Commanders felt like Quan Martin could offer something a little different from what they already possessed. The former Illinois standout has some outstanding physical traits to call upon, which have been on show throughout Washington's early on-field workouts to further raise expectations.

Martin has been working with the first-team defense plenty throughout OTAs and hasn't disappointed. There is no legal hitting as yet - which is a big part of the player's game - but there seems to be a level of conviction in coverage and sound positional sense that could mean extended reps come his way immediately next season.

The criticism surrounding Washington's decision to take Martin was nothing to do with the player's talent. He showed that in abundance throughout an exceptional spell with the Fighting Illi, so the Commanders will be hoping for a similar output no matter where they line him up from one down to the next.

There will be sterner tests ahead. But for now, it's so far and so good for Martin's transition to the Commanders.
