Commanders LB David Mayo had a good day

It's been surprising to see the Washington Commanders do very little to strengthen their linebacking options this offseason. The signing of Cody Barton in free agency was offset by Cole Holcomb's departure to the Pittsburgh Steelers, so it'll be fascinating to witness this particular depth chart dynamic unfolding throughout the summer.

Jamin Davis and Barton should fill starting roles. Jack Del Rio also runs a lot of two-linebacker sets as part of his defensive scheme, which is probably why the Commanders opted for multiple reinforcements within the secondary rather than the second level.

These depth concerns could mean more involvement for David Mayo. The veteran has been a core special teamer and trusted ally of Ron Rivera's both in Washington and during their time with the Carolina Panthers, which is trust that simply cannot be bought.

Mayo is keen to maximize every rep coming his way with the first unit. According to those in attendance on Thursday, the linebacker looked especially sharp in coverage and was confident enough to jump routes when he felt it was worth the risk.

This was a step in the right direction for Mayo, who could emerge as a surprising contributor if this trend continues heading into the business end of preparations.
