The Washington Commanders are fortunate enough to have one of the league's best young safety tandems at their disposal. Darrick Forrest and Kamren Curl continue to come of age together - something that has the potential to solidify the backend for a decade if both manage to avoid the injury bug.

This makes it difficult for others to make their presence felt on the starting rotation. But defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio is renowned for utilizing two or even one-linebacker sets, focusing more on the secondary making plays depending on the situation.

There is now an embarrassment of riches across Wasington's defensive backs for Del Rio to utilize as he sees fit. Position versatility is key for some, but there's a good chance Percy Butler can get more playing time after flashing moments of quality as a raw rookie when called upon.

Butler came in for praise from Ron Rivera earlier this offseason for the improvements he's made away from the team. The 2022 fourth-round selection was a little rough around the edges as expected during his rookie campaign, where defensive reps were restricted as the player emerged as a decent special teams contributor instead.

This was a solid platform from which to build and Butler has clearly been highly committed to developing his craft heading into Year 2 of his professional career. If he can shake things up at training camp, a bigger role should follow.
